Reenactor Groups:

Putting together a reasonably accurate U.S.-Mexican War uniform is not the easiest thing you'll ever do by far. But contrary to what some folks might say, it's not impossible - besides, if we wanted easy, we'd join a CW group, right? What follows is a list of reproduction field uniform items and gear I have been able to acquire and the sources I used:

Only two items have thus far eluded me:

  • Sword, foot officer, pattern of 1840: reproductions of the nearly identical 1840 NCO sword are available; it lacks the engraving common to the officer version but is of the same design, shape, and length - a reasonable stand-in!
  • Button, Infantry "I" (small silver): four needed for Frock Coat cuffs; I used the large buttons instead - if you're a stickler about this, buy the CW-era brass buttons and have 'em nickle plated

One warning about the canvas trousers from Milk Creek: the seam edges are not finished and will turn into a mass of strings the first time you launder them. Best to deal with this while they're fresh from the suttler!

It's just about as easy to create a convincing artillery, dragoon, or U.S. Marine uniform (officer or enlisted) as well as one for an enlisted infantryman. For additional help and suggestions on how to get started, please contact the .
